Department of Labor begins reinstating fired probationary employees, union email says



The Department of Labor on Friday began reinstating all of its probationary employees who were fired by the Trump administration, according to an email from a local chapter of the American Federation of Government Employees to union members and viewed by CNN.

The department has started the process of directly notifying the impacted employees, telling them to report to work on Monday, March 10, according to the email. An AFGE national spokesperson told CNN that their members at the agency “have begun receiving reinstatement letters.”

The about face comes after a federal judge last week paused the layoffs, saying that the Office of Personnel Management does not have the authority to direct other agencies to dismiss their employees and that mass firings of the probationary staffers were likely unlawful. That ruling led to OPM revising its initial memo to federal agencies to now say: “Agencies have ultimate decision making authority over, and responsibility for, such personnel actions.”
