Justice Department fires pardon attorney
The head of the Justice Department’s pardon office was fired, the ousted pardon attorney announced Friday.
Elizabeth Oyer, who has served as the pardon attorney since 2022, posted on LinkedIn that she was “fired today from the job I have poured my heart and soul into for the last three years.”
“I am so proud of the team we built in the Office of the Pardon Attorney, who will carry on our important work,” she said. “I’m very grateful for the many extraordinary people I’ve had the opportunity to connect with on this journey. Thank you for your partnership, your support, and your belief in second chances.”
Though nonpartisan, Oyer’s office has been a focus of the public eye as President Donald Trump offers pardons to his allies and supporters – most notably those who were convicted of crimes related to the January 6, 2021, US Capitol riot.
Oyer shared a copy of the removal notice from Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche relieving her of her position on social media. The letter says that Oyer has been “removed from your Senior Executive Service (SES) position of Pardon Attorney, Office of the Pardon Attorney, and from federal service, effective immediately. Blanche noted that Oyer could appeal her firing to the US Merit Systems Protection Board.
In a statement to CNN, her spokesperson Andrew Feldman said, “Liz is evaluating all options and next steps,” adding that “she is proud of her service to the American people.”
