Trump signs executive order creating task force to oversee prep for 2026 World Cup

President Donald Trump on Friday signed an executive order to create a task force that will oversee preparations for the 2026 World Cup that’s being co-hosted by the US, Canada and Mexico.

Trump has been especially proud of the US hosting the tournament, and he was president in 2018 when the bid was awarded to the countries. He said he does plan to attend some matches.

“It’s a great honor for our country to have it. Actually, it’s a big deal. It’s, I don’t know which is bigger, the Olympics of the World Cup,” Trump said, alluding to the Summer Games coming to Los Angeles in 2028

He said the current tensions with Mexico and Canada will “make it more exciting.”

Joining the president for the announcement was FIFA President Gianni Infantino, who said the tournament will create around 200,000 jobs and have an economic impact of around $40 billion. An estimated 8 million foreign travelers are expected to come to the US for the tournament, which kicks off in June 2026.

“America will welcome the world. There will be millions of people coming, Mr. President, millions of people,” Infantino said, thanking the president for setting up the task force and presiding on it to convey the importance of the tournament.
